Portland, OR, is a city that is way, way down with garage rock. Throughout the years this rainy little river town has seen the rise of some of the world's most admired and influential DIY rock pioneers, like the graveyard-punk blues of Dead Moon to the ever-beloved proto-grunge of The Wipers. In recent years bands like Eat Skull and Mean Jeans have garnered local and international attention and acclaim by nerds and elites alike. But if you ask either of those bands, or any of the other dozen-dozen drunk rockers in PDX, they'll probably tell you that The Whines are the best band in town. If the Velvet Underground, Television Personalities and Crazy Horse had a band with a sad, faded girl for a singer maybe they would sound like The Whines; no other band sounds like them. This collection of early recordings also features their first 7" and a more recent WFMU live-radio session. This is one of the most essential cassettes we've ever issued and we think you'll agree. 2nd pressing with a whole B-side of extras.
(Tracks: A: Barbershop Fartet, Teleporter, I Ran, Sappy Blob, I'm a Maggot, On the Farm Again, Don't Wreck My High, Me Neither, Hey Babe, Lightheads, Nice Pills, The Lamp, The Worm, Randy Lost in the City, Randy Found / B: (WFMU) Cut Meat, How to Act, Electric Current, Straybird, Take Care of Yourself, Insane OK, Shoot in Head; (7") Insane OK, Starving Dog Art, Indian Homewrecker, Lines Between Us)
The sequel to last year's smash success 'Rub Rub Relief' is an instant classic. A rising star full of hot gas, Unkle Funkle has been quickly gaining popularity for his ultra-crisp, intelligent and humorous take on Top 40 radio and Pop Music at large. Recorded entirely by the man himself, "Picture of My Dick" takes the listener on a very personally guided tour of pop music history. From 80s frat-rock to helium-pitch R&B to radio-ready pop rock to gay country, the Funkle expands the depth and production of his classically trained compositions to an all-time sublime. The imitation commercials and radio segues go deeper and weirder. This one pops harder than anyone could have expected. Watch out for LP on the esteemed Marriage Records later this year. Get this one quick, it's going fast!
(WARNING: The artist's actual (male) genitalia is proudly adorned on the album cover.)
(Tracks: A: Bad in a Good Way, Jack and Jill, Have You Ever Felt a Pain That You Couldn't Explain?, Rollin' (w/ commercial), OPP (commercial), Made a Mistake, Picture of My Dick, Baby to Lean On (w/ commercial); B: What Would You Do?, The Balls (commercial), I Wouldn't Expect You to Understand, Really (commercial), I Don't Wanna Be in Love with You, I Can't Sk8)

Pro-dubbed w/ DL
GNAR068
These four lads have quickly gained the attention and admiration of Portland's punk population for their 70s style guitar pop informed by UK punk pioneers like Buzzcocks and The Clash. Youthbitch's beer drenched anthems for drunk punks and fun-loving rascals have captured the hearts of fans young and old for their bubblegummy melodies and Exploding Hearts-style power-pop grandeur. Lifestyle lyrics about summer nights partying and less than loveable girlfriends stay true to the switchblade & leather romanticism that makes music like this so fun and appealing. Definitely a band to look out for this year, especially if you're into bands of the Burger and Dirtnap Records variety. Debut LP later this year, with plenty of shows and tours to catch. The fifth Youthbitch is YOU!
(Tracks: A: Richie Rich, My Girlfriend ('s a Whore), El Principe, Summer of the Iceman, Sick All Over; B: Can't Help It, Punk Show, Cool California, Cross My Heart)
Timmy's long awaited sophomore album is epically huge and ultimately mind-melting. Medieval ambiance, mutant noise rock, alien basement dub, psychic drum freakouts and apocalyptic poetry await you as you take the midnight ride with Timmy. In it's staggering 81 minutes, the new album by this motley band of weirdos and militants offers a truly escapist experience; a cry for a new world without oppressive influences like Taco Bell and a call for trolls, leprechauns, elephants, dragons, demons and dinosaurs to rise as one and tear down the system. The savage expressions unleashed in this dense work are the screams of free birds turned to bats, the sound of animals in the matrix. So take the ride, there's room in dad's van to party.
(Tracks: A: Timmy's Constant Capitalist Revolutions, Is There Room In Your Dad's Van to Party?, Dinosaurs Shit Cheesy Fiesta Potatoes, Timmy's Holiday Parade in the Sun, A Thousand Civil Wars, KILL UR BOSS, 80 Foot Victorian Elephants Smashing Aliens, Midnight Ride Along With Timmy, Sad Sounds on the Beach, God's Thousands of Lounges; B: DETOX THE ACID DRAGON, Leprechaun Vs. Troll (Shake Your Chains), Beautiful Sea Lions)
Like a powerful narcotic or a fountain of light bursting through clouds, the soothing sounds of Cool Angels will wash over you in a euphoric wave of bliss. Dream pop in soft-focus, love songs in the most chillest expression; Nick Ray's recent relocation to Oakland has produced a truly captivating debut cassette. Demure is not too far a stretch from the 80s nostalgia sounds of his other project Speculator (whose recent, and excellent, Underwater Peoples released LP Nice has recieved consistant internet acclaim) but the overall vibe is decidedly more longing and sad, like a David Lynch soundtrack or a memory of a song from a movie that may or may not exist. Chillingly gorgeous vocal contributions from Young Prisms' Stef Hodapp and Boy Friend's Christa Palazzolo highlight this beautiful, and beautifully composed, lovegaze classic. Exciting new sounds from one of our generation's most promising young popsmiths.
(Tracks: Watch Me Away, Don't Feel Like Holding On, She's So Fresh, It's Ok, I Want 2 Be With Him, Just Because, Kind, Are You Real?, Demure)
Grrrl Friend's first tape is soaked like bong water on the carpet with pop melodies disguised as shreddy guitar rockers, gazer punk dreams, goth trip outs, and grungey bong-rock rippers; an instant classic that has already spread like scabies over the internet. One of the darker drips on Happening Now is "Dirtgasm", a shoegazed nightmare anthem for cold nights in the city and bored junkie fantasies. The contrast of the male and female vocals on certain tracks, including the title track, "Doppleganger 12-Step" and "Hydroxozine", bring back memories of 80s college rock gems like early Sonic Youth and REM or New Day Rising-era Husker Du. Frenetic Minutemen-meets-Boredoms no-waver jock jams like "How Allah Stole Christmas" and "Black Jesus Christ" are more reminiscent of mid-late 80s NY, the time and place of birth for band leader Duffy "Rongiland" (a nickname from his days booking and working sound for punk shows in his native Long Island, NY). Duffy claims Grrl Friend to have gone through over 20 members, with him being the one constant, but much of GF's past is shrouded in a haze of confusion and pot smoke. After relocating to Portland he eventually moved into show space and hang zone House of Preblon, a hub for many of PDX's best young punk bands and HQ for video site Indie Rock Sucks. The songs on this cassette were written, performed and recorded to be an album and the playback is supreme. This is stoner rock; euphoric, sometimes nostalgic, a little paranoid, kind of sloppy and totally beautiful. But it's also pop music so beneath all the fuzz, reverb and darkenss there are real songs that stick in your head, like bong resin on the brain. (Tracks: Happening Now, How Allah Stole Christmas, Doppleganger 12-Step, Dirtgasm, Black Jesus Christ, Hydroxozine, By a Thread, Pet Frownz, Beastiality BBQ, II, I Explode, All White People Look the Same (To Me), Not Happening Now)
Adam Forkner has been performing, recording, and releasing music for almost two decades, but if you're reading this you're probably already well aware of that. You're probably also well aware that he's toured with Dirty Projectors, Devendra Banhart, Deerhunter, Little Wings, Calvin Johnson etc. You probably also know he's released his music through Kranky, K Records, Marriage Records, Gnar Tapes and a multitude of others. You probably have the last two tapes he released through Gnar, or at least the mp3s, and you're probably going to buy this one. Compiling unreleased tracks recorded from 2007-2010, this tape is heavy on ambient guitar work though tabla drum jams and electric boogies are laced within. If you like anything this man has released for the past five years, you'll be stoked to hear songs that weren't included on his last few albums; there's only so many ten-minute-songs you can fit on a vinyl. Another long player from the longest player of all.
(Tracks: beelievee it if you need it / doing the doobie shit sandwich / ARE YOU STILL SATISFIED WITH LIFE AS A WHOLE / darker drift / new new shits / FUNNY DOGGIE BOWZER BUSY / slow air blood / gugugugugu / DARK TABLA TROUBLE / spring jump tests / newagemoogs / townloungemarch232006)
The commander-in-chief of Gnar Tapes, and singer for White Fang and The Memories, offers a collection of home-recorded jingles and ditties. Folky without being precious, punk without taking himself to seriously. An amusing tape for fans of either of the man's bands or a good introduction to the vibe and stylings of this stoned joker.
Gnar Tapes' founding fathers' 3rd album solidifies their role as the belt-wearing champions of stoned shredding. Featuring future-classic fan favorites "Not Listening", "Feeling Shitty" and the title track, this is the office-wide memo for Gnar rockers everywhere. Comes with a huge poster of the band and a digital download for your computer-world. A fun record for beers and bongs with friends.
